Professor Bill Barnett from the Graduate School of Management at Stanford University will headline the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA) Inspire event in Sydney on 18 September.

Drawing on one of the world’s foremost visionaries, Steve Jobs, Professor Barnett will explain what it takes to be a great leader and how to create a vision to make a business prosper, applying the concept that ‘success is a self-fulfilling prophecy’.

Deborah Kent, Chair of the AFA Inspire Program, said Professor Barnett will share insights presented to Stanford Graduates and also on the international stage, focusing on leading people to innovate.

“Professor Barnett’s expertise in the areas of leadership, strategy, culture and client engagement will be of great benefit to women who are needing that extra inspiration to change or improve their approach to business,” she said. “Professor Barnett’s knowledge in these areas complements the aim of the AFA Inspire program – to give women the tools and support they need to achieve their goals and to give men the understanding and support they need to relate to female clients and colleagues.”

Ms Kent said Professor Barnett’s presentation is especially relevant to females in the Australian financial services industry, who may be still struggling with the issue of a ‘glass ceiling’.

“We are constantly aiming to build a supportive culture within the AFA Inspire community, from an individual right up to a corporate level,” Ms Kent said. “Gender bias still exists and is a barrier to success for some women and we need to take a proactive approach to help women overcome the core issues causing this.”

Ms Kent said Professor Barnett will give those who attend the workshop the practical and theoretical tools to take their personal and business development to the next level. “Professor Barnett will explain how to build strategies in business that encourage all staff members to take a pro-active approach to achieving the same goals,” she said.

The AFA Inspire program, launched earlier this year, aims to help females find their voice and encourages them to seek support within the financial services industry.
