The BT Future2 Wheel Classic is the initiative of Future2 founding trustees Ray Griffin and Peter Bobbin. Ray is a keen amateur cyclist and former award-winning financial planning professional. Peter Bobbin is a well known Sydney based tax lawyer to the financial services industry. The inaugural BT Future2 Wheel Classic in 2010 raised over $88,000 for Future2’s grant program, which supports charities giving a second chance to disadvantaged young Australians. The 1250 km ride follows the route taken in 1955 by Ray’s father, now aged 79, a member of the Speedwell team that took part in the Daily Telegraph-sponsored Bourke – Sydney Cycle Tour. In those days much of the road was rough and untarred.

As well as fundraising, the objective of the ride is to create local, state-wide and national awareness of the great work that many financial planners do in their communities, giving practical help for the financially and socially disadvantaged. All of the money raised – through sponsorship, donations and fundraising events – will go to the Future2 Foundation.Cyclists who register to take part will be required to make a payment of $150 ($125 for shared room) per day to cover accommodation, meals and a contribution to insurance and support vehicle costs.As well as our Gold, Silver and Bronze partners, the BT Future2 Wheel Classic has been generously supported by other suppliers of goods and services. The New Zealand Investment Symposium is being presented by an exceptional faculty of Australian investment experts visiting Christchurch this week, exclusively to support Christchurch financial advisers affected by the recent earthquake, and their clients.

Sydney-based Christchurch expat Graham Rich, and organiser said Wednesday’s Symposium, and a dinner for the 100 delegates and their partners is being hosted free-of-charge for all Christchurch-based financial advisers. A number of financial advisers from as far away as Auckland and Invercargill have also flown in especially to support their colleagues and to benefit from the education.

The Symposium is designed to achieve several objectives, said Graham Rich of PortfolioConstruction Forum. “Christchurch based advisers have not had time to manage their own continuing professional development recently and so we can help with that by bringing the best of the best investment minds to them. Our presenters really want to offer practical and professional help, to enable investors to get the flow-on benefit of better quality advice. Plus, we get to spend some money in Canterbury to support local business at a time when many conferences have taken the easy option and gone elsewhere. Finally, all surplus proceeds will be donated to the government earthquake fund.”

Speakers, who have all donated their time and costs, plus contributed to the funding, include Australian’s Jonathan Pain investment strategist and author of the Pain Report; Hamish Douglass, CEO and investment manager of Magellan Financial Group; Peter Dorrian, investment specialist of PIMCO; Tim Farrelly, investment strategist of farrelly’s Investment Strategy; Paul Barrett, Head of  ANZ Advice Australia and Graham Rich are New Zealanders who have returned from Sydney especially to present. In addition, George Kerr, CEO of Torchlight Investment Group and John Ombler, acting Chief Executive of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority will open the program with a briefing and  Brigadier Anne Campbell (NZ Army retired) will close the program with a specialist disaster recovery management session.

Four grants totaling $41,000 were announced today by Future2, giving vital support to grassroots projects working to transform the lives of disadvantaged young Australians who are at risk.

The four were selected from over 20 applications, each endorsed by a local financial planning professional.  They are:

$10,000 to the Australian Children’s Music Foundation ‘s (ACMF) Youth at Risk Music Program (North Sydney NSW).  Application supported by John Tutt, FPA member.

$10,000 to Family Resource & Network Support Inc (FRANS) for a financial literacy program for young people with disabilities (Croydon NSW). Application supported by Guy Thornycroft, FPA Sydney Chapter committee member.

$6,000 to Galilee Inc for a Young Women’s Craft Group (Pearce, Canberra ACT).  Application supported by Philip Basche, former FPA ACT Chapter Chair and a director of Galilee.

$15,000 to Mission Australia’s Charcoal Lane training program (Melbourne, VIC).  Application supported by Julian Place, FPA Melbourne Chapter Chair.

Future2 Chair Steven Helmich said this year, the  fourth round of Future2 Make the Difference! Grants, the quality and relevance of applications to the selection criteria was higher than ever.

“We saw a wider geographic spread and greater engagement by financial planners.

“It was inspiring to read of the work being done to repair damaged lives, build essential skills and offer pathways to sustainable employment”, Mr Helmich said.

“The successful applicants each has a great track record of achievement and a passionate commitment to touching and improving the lives of young Australians who are marginalized and lacking the opportunities most of us take for granted”, he added.

Future2 made its first grants in 2007, the year of the Foundation’s establishment.  Each year since then trustees have made further grants under the Make the Difference! Grants program.  Including these latest grants, some $150,000 has been committed to community initiatives that are bringing a second chance and hope for a better future to financially and socially disadvantaged young Australians.
