Victor Smorgon Partners Global Multi-Strategy Fund has won the ‘Best Multi-Strategy Fund’ award at the 2024 Hedge Funds Rock + The Australian Alternative Investment Awards for the second year running, with the fund outperforming most of its peers.

The Hedge Funds Rock + Australian Alternative Investment Awards, established in 2005 to honour the industry’s top performers, was held in Sydney on 25 September. Winners are decided based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative factors considered by a panel of judges in ten categories.

The ‘Best Multi-Strategy Fund’ award recognises the performance of the Global-Multi Strategy Fund (GMF) over the last three years. The GMF’s portfolio strategies have delivered an annualised return of 21.8% over the three years to 31 August 2024 and 37.1% since the January 2019 inception. The GMF is available through NetWealth, PowerWrap, Mason Stevens, HUB24, Praemium, and Macquarie Wrap platforms.

Joseph Sitch, Co-CIO of the Global Multi-Strategy Fund, who attended the awards, said: “The Victor Smorgon Group team that manages the Fund are proud of winning the award for Best Multi-Strategy Fund for a second year running.

“The GMF applies a contrarian and absolute returns focus, which enables our team to concentrate on generating returns without continual concern for how the market is positioned,” Mr Sitch said. “Investing in the Fund can complement an investor’s existing allocation to alternative investments or sit within a portfolio of global equity managers.”

Founded in 1995, the Victor Smorgon Group (the Group) is a privately owned family office based in Melbourne, Australia. The Group’s portfolio was seeded internally in 2019, and the Global Multi-Strategy Fund was established in May 2022 to enable Australian investors to invest alongside the Victor Smorgon Group family office.

“This has enabled our investors to leverage the senior team’s collective operational experience and deep understanding of financial markets and investment expertise,” he said.

“The Fund’s rigorous and dynamic investment strategy is anchored by three pillars: Theme, Activation and Risk & Portfolio Management. The fund is currently positioned in companies possessing strong free cash flow and high operating margins in areas of the economy that are structurally growing, and we expect ongoing strong returns as we explore the globe for great investment opportunities that individual investors wouldn’t necessarily be able to access,” Mr Sitch said.

“We are excited to be added to the HUB24 adviser platform to bring the award-winning Global Multi-Strategy Fund to Australian advisers and investors,” said Victor Smorgon Group’s Joseph Sitch, Co-CIO of the Victor Smorgon Partners Global Multi-Strategy Fund.

“Offering advisers access to the GMF will now enable Australians to take advantage of the successful wealth creation opportunities offered by the GMF, which has delivered an impressive 40.6% per annum return to investors since its inception in 2019, outperforming most Australian and global equity managers,” he said.

“Advisers can now access the Fund on Hub24, Netwealth, Powerwrap and Mason Stevens platforms. Our presence on these platforms opens the opportunity for all Australians to join in the wealth building strategies of the Victor Smorgon Group,” Mr Sitch said.

The GMF returned 2.8% in April and has returned 22.6% over the financial year to date. In recognition of its outstanding performance, the Global Multi-Strategy Fund won the ‘Best Multi-Strategy Fund’ award at the 2023 Hedge Funds Rock + The Australian Alternative Investment Awards.

“The GMF has outperformed the MSCI World Index, ASX 200 Index, and S&P 500 indices since its inception in January 2019and this outperformance could continue given Victor Smorgon Partners’ success in identifying key themes which are delivering long-term wealth creation to investors. These include automation and gold as a defensive investment. Another key theme is investing in companies which are enabling decarbonisation, such as copper miners.

“The Fund is unique as it has exposure to many themes – both listed and unlisted. Victor Smorgon Partners searches the globe for rewarding investments and we apply an operator’s mindset to all investments, focusing on companies with healthy earnings and margins,” Mr Sitch said.

“The Fund’s ongoing focus on real assets and free cash flow fundamentals has allowed it to consistently outperform during periods of heightened volatility and economic uncertainty. Importantly, we believe that companies currently generating cash flow underpinned by real asset ownership will continue to outperform companies with longer dated cash flows,” Mr Sitch said.

“Now, working with popular platform providers such HUB24, the fund is widely available to financial advisers to meet the wealth creation needs of Australian investors.”
