AMP Super is helping more Australians confidently convert their superannuation balances into lifetime income with a market-first retirement package.

It brings together an income stream for life, a temporary boost to support with home care and simple online tools to plan and manage retirement income. Combined the solutions are designed to empower retirees to spend their savings and live more fulfilling lives.

Retirement worries

The package comes as new findings reveal a heightened sense of anxiety before retirement – with 54% of Australians aged 58-60 and 50% of those aged 61-65 reporting they “often feel stressed or overwhelmed” when thinking about their finances[1]. They echo AMP’s Retirement Confidence Pulse[2], which showed that just half of Australians feel financially confident about retirement.

Aged-care anxiety

Further, a report released earlier this month found that between November and March, wait times were on average 12 months[3] for Australians to access government funding support for ongoing care in a residential aged care home or support at home. Meanwhile, AMP research found that 7 in 10 Australians over 65 worry about the cost of aged care, which is addressed with this package.

The new package includes three core components:

1. Higher levels of income

At the centre is the new AMP Lifetime Retirement Income, which provides members confidence their income will last for life with the flexibility they need. Members are expected to spend an average of 60% more in retirement than they would without the solution[5].

2. Extra income for home care

AMP Super members can now receive a 20% increase to their lifetime income for two years when they become eligible for high-level in-home care[6], helping provide additional support during a period of transition and uncertainty.

3. Online help in the form of digital financial advice

A new tailored online experience guides members through their options, helping them understand their projected retirement income, compare strategies, and receive personalised recommendations.

Julie Slapp, Director, Growth & Customer Solutions, AMP said this marks another important step forward for Australia’s super industry to help more of our members retire with confidence.

“Australia has built one of the world’s strongest super systems. The unmet challenge is helping members confidently turn their super into income they actually use.

“We know that too many Australians remain uncertain about retirement – whether they have enough savings, how long it will last, and how to make the right decisions.

“This offering provides the confidence of income for life, the potential for higher income, and the guidance members need to make informed decisions.

“Super was never meant to be just a balance on a screen. It was designed to deliver income, security and choice in retirement. Our focus is helping members feel confident spending their super and enjoying the years ahead, knowing they have support in place.”

A quarter of Australians have never engaged with their super fund – and almost half only check in once or twice a year – according to new research from AMP.

The findings, reveal that more than 1 in 4 (27%) of Australians either don’t know who their super provider is or have never interacted with them.

The fresh insights shed light on why AMP’s recently released Retirement Confidence Pulse score is just 50 out of 100.

Unaware of help

Only one in ten Australians know what “intra-fund advice” is – dropping to just 7% among those aged 50 to 64 – despite the majority saying they would use it if they knew it existed.

Intra-fund advice is provided by leading super funds to members at no extra cost to help them optimise their super within the fund, for example, with contribution, investment and transition-to-retirement strategies.

Julie Slapp, AMP Super’s Director of Growth and Customer Solutions, said: “Too many Australians are disengaged with their super and unaware of the significant help available – support that could transform their quality of life in retirement.”

“Small steps – like checking your fund details or talking to your provider – can build confidence and unlock the full benefits of compounding returns.”

“We know that as little as an extra $20 a week put into super can grow to ~$98k over 30 years through compounding, yet more than half of Aussies under 40 don’t understand the concept.”

“Programs such as AMP Rewards, also make it easy to turn spare change into super savings that compound over time.”

“We also strongly encourage Australians to take full advantage of intra-fund and digital financial advice, often provided at no extra cost by super funds – the guidance can be transformational.”

Generational silence on money

The research also shows that financial conversations are rarely passed down through families. More than four in five Australians over 50 said their parents never discussed or shared learnings about savings or retirement.

This “generational silence” around money may be limiting confidence and understanding among younger Australians.

“We know that money is often, and understandably, a taboo topic within families,” Ms Slapp said. “But shared learnings – especially from those already in retirement – can make a huge difference to future financial wellbeing.”

The barriers

Cost remains the top barrier to seeking advice, even though intra-fund advice is offered for no additional cost. The research also found that:

Low engagement: 27% never engage with their super provider; 44% only once or twice a year. Only 8% of Australians aged 50+ started regularly checking their super balance in their 20s.

Untapped support: 70% would use intra-fund advice if they knew it was available.

Late start: 3 in 4 (74%) Australians aged 50–64 wish they’d started saving earlier. For those under 50, nearly 2 in 5 wished they’d started thinking about their retirement in their 20s.

Public mandate: 94% want financial literacy taught in schools.

Three simple steps to get started:

Log in and check your fund. Know your provider, check your investment mix, and consolidate accounts if needed.

Ask about intra-fund advice. Access your fund’s phone-based advice or digital financial advice which is now offered by leading funds.

Start money conversations at home. Use your annual statement as a springboard to talk about retirement and super with the family.

“It takes hardly any time to review your fund online – and that small step could make a meaningful difference to your retirement outcome,” Ms Slapp said.

The research is based on AMP commissioned research of 2,000 Australians by independent research company, Dynata in July 2025.

AMP has bolstered its focus on growth, digital innovation and customer solutions, as well as adding depth to its risk team, with two senior appointments to its Super and Investments leadership team.

Julie Slapp has been appointed as AMP’s Director for Growth and Customer Solutions, a newly-created role, and Cloe Reece has joined as General Manager, Risk, Compliance and Policy. Both roles will report into AMP’s Group Executive for Superannuation and Investments, Melinda Howes.

Julie brings more than 20 years of experience in product, customer solution design and digital innovation, and will commence in her new role on Monday 25 November.

Cloe is a senior risk and compliance professional with 30 years of experience in financial services, in addition to extensive experience in working with ASX 100 companies on risk transformation and remediation.

Julie will be responsible for developing and compliantly managing customer solutions and offers that differentiate AMP Super and AMP Investments in the market.

In this role, Julie will focus on driving total member growth as well as funds under management, contributing to the scale and growth of both the AMP Super and AMP Investments businesses.

She will also ensure AMP continues to deliver exceptional customer solutions and innovative digital experiences. Most recently, Julie was the General Manager, Wealth at Flare, leading super partner relationships to optimise new and existing member engagement.

Prior to her role at Flare, Julie had an extensive career at Westpac and BT, holding several roles in strategy and product development, all customer-centred and focused on driving member engagement.

Cloe has held a number of senior risk, compliance, governance and audit roles across first and second line for nearly 30 years.

With strong expertise in risk and compliance framework development, implementation and execution, Cloe has served in senior leadership roles across Australia’s Big Four banks and most recently served as the Chief Risk Officer for Clearview Limited.

Cloe brings this wealth of experience to AMP, having led transformation and change initiatives across multiple organisations and delivered strategic priorities such as business acquisition and divestment.
She operates with a strong focus on driving value out of risk and compliance, enabling businesses to take appropriate risks to support better customer experiences.

Melinda Howes, Group Executive, Superannuation and Investments said: “We’re delighted to welcome Julie Slapp and Cloe Reece to our Superannuation and Investments leadership team as AMP expands its growth, customer solutions and risk expertise. “Julie and Cloe will help to continue AMP’s 175-year heritage of innovation.

“Designing beautiful digital experiences to engage our members is critical to our vision in helping more Australians accumulate wealth through super and create an income stream for life. In order to innovate, we need to move quickly and take appropriate risks, supported by the right risk and compliance advice.

“Cloe and Julie are two formidable appointments whose experience will be a great addition to the Super and Investments business and will provide strong support for our current teams driving our growth strategy as well as our risk and compliance frameworks.”
