GQG Partners, one of the world’s leading global equity boutique investment management firms, has been awarded the International Equities – Emerging Markets and Regional accolade for its GQG Partners Emerging Markets Equity Fund at the 2023 Zenith Fund Awards, held in Sydney on Friday, 13 October.

This marks the second consecutive year that a GQG Partners fund has been acknowledged, with the GQG Partners Global Equity Fund taking out the International Equities – Global category in 2022.

The Zenith Fund Awards acknowledge and encourage excellence in funds management across all asset classes and disciplines and aim to raise the standard of funds management in the industry for the ultimate benefit of investors. Each award is based on long-term factors derived from Zenith’s extensive research and due diligence of fund managers.

The GQG Partners Emerging Markets Equity Fund seeks to invest in quality companies with attractively priced future growth prospects in emerging markets. The fundamental investment process evaluates each business based on financial strength, sustainability of earnings growth, and quality of management. It aims to limit downside risk while providing attractive returns to long-term investors over a full market cycle.

Laird Abernethy, managing director, Australia, and New Zealand, GQG Partners, said that winning the International Equities – Emerging Markets and Regional award is an outstanding accolade for the business and is testament to the adaptability, durability, and strength of GQG’s investment team and process.

“Our investment process at GQG is centred around identifying those companies that exhibit strong ‘forward looking’ quality attributes. We believe that focussing on the future quality of a company, as opposed to its current or historic quality, enables the team to think outside the traditional prism of value and growth investing and instead focus on identifying those future quality compounders, regardless of which sector they may reside.

“We believe this forward-looking approach provides our portfolio managers a higher degree of adaptability, particularly as market regimes shift.”

Whilst headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, GQG Partners has a strong affinity with Australia, opening its first registered office outside of the USA in Sydney 2019. Additionally, GQG Partners’ parent company, GQG Inc., was listed on the ASX in October 2021.

The GQG Partners Emerging Markets Equity Fund holds a ‘Highly Recommended’ rating from both Zenith and Lonsec as well as a Morningstar Medalist RatingTM of ‘Gold’ (assigned 04/05/23).

As at 30 September 2023, the GQG Partners Emerging Markets Equity Fund is the sole emerging markets fund in Australia to receive the highest rating from all three of the country’s prominent investment research and portfolio construction institutions.

Global asset manager GQG Partners has won the ‘International Equities – Emerging Markets and Regional’ category at the Zenith Fund Awards 2020.

Hosted by Zenith Investment Partners, the Awards are designed to recognise and encourage excellence in funds management across all asset classes and disciplines in raising the standard of funds management for the ultimate benefit of investors.

GQG Partners’ emerging markets equity investment strategy seeks to invest in equity and equity-linked securities of primarily large cap, high-quality companies with, in the manager’s view, attractively priced future growth prospects.

According to GQG Partners’ Managing Director, Australia and New Zealand, Laird Abernethy, the Zenith accolade is testament to the strength of the investment process and the skills of the portfolio managers in identifying market risks and opportunities over recent months.

“Global markets reacted so sharply to the events of 2020, and while things appear to have normalised somewhat, our investment team was able to navigate the portfolio effectively and investors have responded accordingly.

“We evaluate each business based on financial strength, potential sustainability of earnings growth, and quality of management, and apply that approach to every prospective stock within the markets in which we operate. It’s pleasing that Zenith has acknowledged this approach with an award win in this category,” Mr Abernethy said.

Judging for the Fund Awards is based on long-term factors derived from Zenith’s due diligence of fund managers including organisational and investment team strength, investment philosophy, security valuation and selection, portfolio construction, risk management, and fees. The research house also looks at quantitative aspects of the funds’ longer-term returns to investors.

The win follows the GQG Partners Global Equity Fund (unhedged) being upgraded to a ‘Highly Recommended’ rating by Zenith earlier this month, at which time the hedged version of the Fund was given a ‘Highly Recommended’ rating in its first review.

The Fund (both hedged and unhedged share classes) seeks to invest in the equity and equity-linked securities of high-quality companies with attractively priced future growth prospects in both developed and emerging markets. It seeks to limit downside risk while providing attractive returns to long-term investors over a full market cycle.

Lonsec Investment Solutions has added the GQG Partners Global Equity Fund to its Lonsec Multi-Asset Managed Portfolios and Lonsec Core Model Portfolios.

Laird Abernethy, GQG Partners’ managing director Australia and New Zealand, says that over the past 12 months GQG Partners has been actively expanding in the local wholesale market and the addition to the Lonsec model portfolios is an important step in this growth.

“Our Global Equity strategy aims to give advisers access to a portfolio of high-quality companies with attractively priced future growth prospects. It also seeks to limit downside risk while providing attractive returns to long-term investors over a full market cycle. This is something that advisers and their clients increasingly value, and we are already seeing good support through the Lonsec portfolios,” he said.

In the current economic and market environment, Lonsec says it believes that the global equities sector would benefit from a greater focus on higher quality companies.

“The GQG Partners Global Equity Fund is an actively managed, fundamental long-only Global Equities product. It has a focus on ‘quality growth’ companies and will typically include emerging markets exposures,” Lonsec said in a note to advisers.

Lonsec also noted “The strategy is managed by a well-regarded and highly skilled portfolio manager, Rajiv Jain, with a track record of building successful investment businesses.”

Earlier this year, Lonsec rated the GQG Partners Global Equity Fund “Highly Recommended”, stating that “Jain is a highly experienced investor with over 26 years’ industry experience and is viewed as a key attraction of this offering… Lonsec has continued to develop greater conviction in Jain’s abilities across several reviews and believes he has proven himself to be a highly skilled investor”.
