AMP Capital has announced the leadership team for its retail real estate business, which is responsible for the fund, investment, property and development management for the shopping centre portfolio. This follows a restructure announced in August this year, where the real estate business was realigned along sector specialisations.

Mark Kirkland has accepted the new role of Head of Retail Development and Asset Creation. This newly created role will have expanded responsibilities beyond master planning and delivery of projects to also focus on coordinating AMP Capital Real Estate’s mixed-use asset creation capability as well as the origination of development investment opportunities for our clients. Currently Head of Retail, Mr Kirkland has been with AMP Capital for seven years, with more than 30 years of experience in real estate including development, operations and construction.

Strengthening the accountability of our asset and investment management teams, Marco Ettorre will be joining AMP Capital to take on the role of Head of Retail and Investments. In this role, Mr Ettorre will be accountable for driving performance, innovation and cultural change through our integrated retail platform and leading the property management, leasing and investment management teams. Currently the Acting Head of Retail at Lendlease, Mr Ettore has spent over 20 years in a number of senior roles, across all aspects of retail management including fund management, leasing, development, asset and investment management.

AMP Capital Managing Director of Retail, Real Estate Brett Williams said he was pleased to put in place the leadership team to set up the business for the future.

“It’s exciting to announce two new roles for our retail business, and the two exceptional real estate professionals we’ve appointed. As we enter a new phase of the property cycle, we’re able to offer clients access to new, compelling development opportunities. Given Mark’s passion and well-regarded experience in development, he’s the perfect candidate to take on this opportunity to lead the next iteration and both deliver our pipeline and grow our development offer for clients.

“I’m very pleased to welcome Marco to AMP Capital to head our Retail team at a time in the market that offers both opportunities and challenges. Marco is highly regarded by both retailers and investors and has the right experience, skills and cultural fit to lead the next evolution of our retail team. I’m confident that both of these changes will allow our business to evolve and actively respond to the opportunities in retail, and to ultimately drive better investment performance and innovation for our clients,” Mr Williams said.

Following these appointments, Justine Hughes as Head of Asset and Investment Management and Greg Antoniadis as Head of Shopping Centre Development will be leaving the business.

Also reporting to Brett Williams on the Retail Leadership Team are Conrad Sinclair, AMP Capital Shopping Centre Fund Manager (ASCF) and AMP Capital Diversified Property Assistant Fund Manager Tom Green.

The new roles are effective January 2020, with Mr Kirkland continuing to lead the retail business until then, at which time both he and Mr Ettore will report directly to Brett Williams.

AMP Capital is one of the largest direct real estate fund managers in the Asia-Pacific1 with more than $28 billion2 in assets under management on behalf of global investors. AMP Capital’s extensive global network and integrated management model allows its 600-strong team of real estate professionals to realise true value for clients through the investment management, property management and development of a portfolio of some of the most iconic shopping centres, office buildings and industrial estates across Australia and New Zealand. AMP Capital’s Retail team is a specialised team that combines world-class experience and specialist capabilities in the management of some of Australia and New Zealand’s most successful and high-performing retail centres, underpinned by comprehensive knowledge of the shopping centre industry and backed by extensive research.

AMP Capital has made a number of changes to its retail real estate business, including its Shopping Centres leadership team, to position it for the next phase of growth. AMP Capital’s Shopping Centres business has a portfolio of 27 centres throughout Australia and New Zealand, which generates more than $A7.9 billion in annual sales.

Bryan Hynes is stepping down from the role of Managing Director to explore the next phase of his career. During a 25-year career in the shopping centres industry, including 18 years at AMP Capital, Mr Hynes has held many senior roles including General Manager of Warringah Mall, Divisional General Manager for New South Wales, South Australia and New Zealand, and Head of Retail Asset Management. Since his appointment as Managing Director in November 2007, the Shopping Centres business has grown from A$4 billion to A$10 billion in assets under management.

Mark Kirkland, currently AMP Capital’s Head of Shopping Centre Development and a member of the Shopping Centres leadership team, has been appointed Managing Director of AMP Capital Shopping Centres effective 1 January 2017. Mr Kirkland joined AMP Capital in late 2012, has extensive experience in the real estate industry and a deep knowledge of the business and track record of delivering for investors.

AMP Capital Global Head of Real Estate Carmel Hourigan said: “With 27 years of major project experience in the property sector, 24 years of which have been focused on retail, Mark brings an impressive skill set to take our Shopping Centres business to the next phase of growth.

“Mark has been instrumental in the successful delivery of Pacific Fair and Macquarie Centre and has contributed heavily to the efforts we have undertaken to maximise the value of the existing portfolio and enhance performance for our investors.

“Now that AMP Capital has delivered these successful developments on the east coast and will be turning our attention to developments in Western Australia, it is the right time to refocus the business under new leadership and I am pleased we have such a strong internal candidate in Mark.

“I would like to acknowledge Bryan’s significant contribution to our business, most recently leading the team in the delivery of award-winning developments at Pacific Fair and Macquarie Shopping Centres. I would like to thank Bryan for the legacy he has created and his efforts in ensuring AMP Capital is best positioned to capitalise on opportunities within the real estate market.”

Greg Antoniadis will replace Mark Kirkland as Head of Development, AMP Capital Shopping Centres. Mr Antoniadis joined AMP Capital in 2016 and is an internationally-experienced property executive. His strong mixed-use capability, coupled with his core retail experience, will be valuable given AMP Capital’s strategic focus on increasing mixed-use across its Real Estate business.

Con Brakatselos, currently AMP Capital Shopping Centres Head of Investment Management and Strategy, will take on a refocused role, working closely with Mr Kirkland on strategy, acquisitions, digital and the future focus of retail. These three new appointments are effective from 1 January 2017.

In addition, AMP Capital’s extensive real estate research capability, which currently sits across the business, will be centralised into a single research team to improve the insights provided to clients and business partners. AMP Capital has created a new role – National Head of Research, Real Estate – to lead this team, reporting directly to Louise Mason, AMP Capital Chief Operating Officer of Real Estate.

A further new role of Head of Strategy and Planning will be added to Louise Mason’s leadership team. This role will lead the strategy and business planning cycle, working closely with the AMP Capital Real Estate leadership team and the broader AMP Capital business.

An internal and external search for both roles is underway.
