Threadneedle Investments, a leading international asset manager, has announced that it will partner with South African investment manager STANLIB, whereby Threadneedle will manage in excess of US$800m in Global and Emerging Market equity portfolios for STANLIB.

STANLIB, which manages over US$44 billion for retail and institutional clients, partners with offshore asset managers with the aim of delivering consistent risk-adjusted returns across its offshore investment range. After an 18-month review process to select a partner for its Global and Emerging Market equity portfolios, Threadneedle was chosen not only for its skill set and strong emerging and developed market equity performance, but also for its investment philosophy which is aligned with that of STANLIB.

Threadneedle takes a team-based approach to fund management, with a culture of open discussion, debate and sharing of ideas. This has resulted in a strong track record of outperformance across asset classes. All of Threadneedle’s Global equity and Emerging Market equity portfolios have outperformed their benchmark or peer group over both three and five years3 (as at 30 June 2012).

Threadneedle’s Head of Global Distribution, Campbell Fleming, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen by STANLIB to become their partner for Global and Emerging Market equities. This appointment recognises the success of our well established investment process and the breadth of our outperformance across our equity teams.

“This arrangement will allow investors based in Africa to access Threadneedle’s investment expertise, and supports our ongoing international growth. We are excited to be working with STANLIB and look forward to further building on this relationship in the future.”

STANLIB’s CEO, Thabo Dloti, said: “It was important for us to partner with a company that shares our business of producing good risk-adjusted returns by following fundamentally based, consistent and sound investment processes. STANLIB and Threadneedle share an investment culture and philosophy, and we are able to cross-pollinate investment ideas and leverage Threadneedle’s expertise for the benefit of local clients. We also believe that Threadneedle will provide our clients with international equity management in line with best of breed.”
