TAL appoints Fred Rowley as Chief Actuary

TAL, Australia’s leading specialist life insurer, has announced that Fred Rowley has joined the company as Chief Actuary.

Mr Rowley will lead the TAL actuarial function, which is the cornerstone of TAL’s financial and regulatory reporting, and supports the optimisation of shareholder value.  The actuarial team provides value-adding advice to the TAL executive team and to the board, to underpin key financial decisions, and enable the sound management of TAL’s core insurance risks and the effective use of capital.

Prior to joining TAL, Mr Rowley was Principal at consultancy Professional Financial Solutions. Previously, he was Head of Finance & Strategy at OnePath Life Risk and Chief Actuary at AMP Ltd.

Mr Rowley will report to TAL’s Chief Financial Officer, Kent Griffin, who said that he was pleased to have been able to appoint someone with Mr Rowley’s breadth and depth of expertise.

“Fred is a highly-skilled senior manager and actuary who has extensive industry experience in both Australia and the UK. We look forward to seeing him leverage this expertise to drive our actuarial strategy and support the business in its ambition of bringing life insurance to more Australians,” said Mr Griffin.

Mr Rowley was President of the Actuaries Institute in 2007, and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Actuaries in Scotland in 2009 for services to the actuarial profession internationally.  This award recognised his leadership in the creation of a global qualification in Enterprise Risk Management (CERA), and the formation of the CERA Global Association, of which he was Chair from 2009 to 2012.

He has a BA in Mathematics from Oxford University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.

Mr Rowley started with TAL on 7 January and is based in the company’s Sydney office.
