Future2 Foundation supported more than 1,200 people in 2025 and awarded 12 grants to programs assisting vulnerable and under-served groups, including women experiencing financial hardship, young people, and First Nations communities, according to its latest Impact Report.

The report highlights Future2’s work in delivering real, measurable impact in communities across Australia. In total, $128,842 in funding was distributed in November 2024 to programs across multiple states and communities nationwide.

Future2 is the charitable foundation of the financial services profession. Through its Make the Difference! Grants Program, it funds grassroots, community-led initiatives that improve financial wellbeing for Australians in need.

Julie Berry CFP, chair of the Future2 Foundation, said it is inspiring to see how the grants are making a tangible impact at a local community level.

“Our aim is to support programs that are practical and outcomes-focused, helping people build financial capability, confidence and independence. The Impact Report demonstrates how our grants program supports projects that are credible, meaningful, and truly making a difference in the community.

“One such program is Kids in Philanthropy’s ‘Pitch for Change’, a hands-on initiative that builds financial literacy in young Australians through a philanthropy lens. In 2025, with a $10,000 grant from Future2, the program engaged 262 Melbourne school students aged 5 to 12. These students supported four charities and reached more than 2,200 people in need through their own fundraising and giving initiatives.

“Another example is MoneyMob Talkabout, which provides financial literacy training in remote First Nations communities. With additional funding of $7,500 contributed by AIA Australia, the program was delivered in East Arnhem Land, further extending its impact. The training is culturally tailored and addresses knowledge gaps not typically covered in school or through family networks.

“In addition, several programs funded in 2024 support women experiencing financial hardship, including those impacted by domestic and family violence. For example, Financial Superwomen Online Workshops help female survivors of violence build financial skills, confidence and independence.

“All of these programs are making a real difference to the lives and financial futures of Australians in need.

“Financial literacy is a pathway to long-term wellbeing and resilience, and Future2 funds impactful, measurable initiatives that strengthen financial capability across the community.

“It is also encouraging to see the financial services industry come together to support meaningful change, as a collective effort driving real community impact.

“Our partners play a key role in supporting this work, both in raising funds and delivering them to deserving programs. We are especially grateful to our strategic partner AIA Australia, as well as HUB24, Vital Business Partners (VBP), Spark Financial Group, Sufficient Funds, Collective Resourcing, and Milford.

“In addition, our community partners – Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA), SMSF Association, Financial Services Council, Institute of Public Accountants, Boutique Financial Planning Principals Association, and Ensombl – provide invaluable support in helping us connect with the financial services community,” Ms Berry said.

Applications for the next round of program funding will open on 9 July 2026 and close on 20 August 2026.

Ms O’Neill is the managing director and principal of Godfrey Group, a boutique recruitment firm specialising in the financial services sector. She has a strong background in business management, strategic leadership and client engagement.

Mr Slovinec has been a board member of Future2 Foundation since 2023. He has over two decades of experience in the financial services industry, including seven years on the board of the Association of Financial Advisers, as national treasurer and state director. He is currently a risk specialist with Pride Advice.

These appointments follow the addition of Ben Marshan to the board in late 2024.

Mr Marshan has over 18 years’ experience in financial services, specialising in advocacy and government relations. He is the founder of Marshan Consulting and prior to this was head of policy, standards, strategy and innovation at the Financial Planning Association (now the Financial Advice Association) for eight years.

In addition to these appointments, Julie Berry CFP has been reappointed as chair for a further two years from June. Directors Olivia Maragna and Steve Thomson have also been reappointed, and Giles Gunesekera OAM continues as a director, having joined the board in 2020.

Ms Berry said the new appointments—along with the reappointment of experienced directors—add further depth to the Foundation’s governance and support its continued mission to help those in need.

“Dave’s longstanding commitment to the Future2 Foundation, along with his deep knowledge of the advice profession, makes him an excellent choice for deputy chair. I look forward to working closely with him as the Foundation continues to grow.

“On behalf of the board, I also welcome Olivia, who is a passionate advocate for financial literacy and believes that improving access to financial knowledge is key to empowering individuals and communities across Australia.

“Ben’s indepth understanding of the issues facing financial advisers, and experience in policy and advocacy, will strengthen Future2 Foundation’s role with the financial services industry and its work supporting financial knowledge and understanding.

“These appointments will help position the Future2 Foundation in its mission to support grassroots programs that improve financial wellbeing for Australians in need,” Ms Berry said.

Nominations are now open for the Future2 Foundation’s 2025 Make the Difference! Grants Program, which supports grassroots initiatives that improve the financial wellbeing of Australians in need. Nominations close on 21 August 2025.

Financial services professionals can nominate local causes close to their hearts to receive a grant of up to $15,000 for programs that support financial wellbeing for Australians in need and align with one or more of the following categories:

Financial Wellbeing for Young Australians – Enhancing financial literacy for Australians under 25 who are experiencing disadvantage.

Financial Wellbeing for Regional and Remote Communities – Strengthening financial wellbeing in rural, regional, and remote parts of Australia.

Julie Berry CFP, chair of the Future2 Foundation, said the Foundation welcomes nominations from people in the financial services industry for causes that are working hard to improve the financial wellbeing of Australians in need.

“We hope that as many financial services professionals as possible will put forward the names of local organisations that aim to bolster financial wellbeing across Australia – the grants rely on the nomination process as organisations can’t apply themselves.

“Our goal is to help Australians build stronger financial futures because we know that improving financial wellbeing makes a real difference to people’s lives. These grants will help empower individuals and communities in need to achieve greater financial stability and independence,” she said.

Through its annual Make the Difference! Grants program, Future2 has committed $1.8 million in grant funding to over 180 community programs since 2007.

Ms Berry says improving financial literacy is essential to helping Australians grappling with the cost-of-living crisis.

““In 2024, 12 grassroots programs made a tangible impact—some spending as little as $50 per participant to deliver long-lasting change.

“For example, last year’s grant winners included a financial literacy program for First Nations communities in remote Australia; an organisation that runs workshops to help female survivors of domestic violence to be financially secure; as well as a program to support disadvantaged young Australians transitioning into the real world of jobs.

“These programs are essential support and education systems for many Australians and we are proud to continue backing them with this year’s grants program,” Ms Berry says.

“We are grateful to our strategic partner, AIA Australia, for its generous support of the Make the Difference! Grants Program. AIA is committed to helping Australians live healthier, longer, better lives, including by championing financial wellbeing. Through this partnership, AIA is helping empower disadvantaged Australians with the knowledge and confidence to take control of their financial futures.”

The Future2 Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2023 Make the Difference! Grants process, open from 1 August to 10 September 2023.

In a nod to the activity of the former Association of Financial Advisers (AFA) Foundation, Future2 has broadened its eligibility criteria for community grants, supporting programs for Australians of any age, not just for those between 12-25 years.

Furthermore, Future2 has expanded its scope to be the foundation of the financial services profession, encouraging all financial services professionals to nominate a community cause for funding.

From 1 August 2023, all financial services professionals are encouraged to nominate causes that are meaningful to them to receive a one-year grant of up to $10,000. This year nominations can be made for a cause that helps Australians in need through:

education, including financial literacy, skills training, and leadership development

engagement, including mentoring and juvenile justice programs

employment, including work experience and job readiness training

wellbeing, including mental health programs and support services, and

independent living and social inclusion.

“Future2 remains focused on supporting small, community causes nominated by financial services professionals, where they can see the ‘money at work’,” says Julie Berry, chair of the Future2 Foundation.

“The foundation will now be able to make an even bigger difference as it brings together the means and reach of the broader financial services community.

“The combined impact of Future2 now includes over 150 community programs worth $1.6 million in total.”

Future2 welcomes new Board members

Future2 is also welcoming two new members to its board: former AFA foundation chair David Slovinec and financial services executive Steve Thomson.

Mr Slovinec has been in the financial services industry since 2007, including seven years on the AFA board, where he has played an extensive role supporting the financial adviser community.

Mr Thomson is an executive with over 30 years of corporate financial services experience in start-up and blue-chip organisations, including ING, Westpac, Avant, Zurich and Clearview Financial Services.

Mr Slovinec says: “I am really excited to be a part of the Future2 Foundation, and I encourage past AFA members & AFA Foundation supporters to get behind the grants initiative and nominate a worthy cause to receive a Future2 grant.”

Ms Berry says: “We are very fortunate to have executives of the calibre of Dave and Steve joining the board. With their leadership, combined with a broader grant eligibility, Future2 can continue to grow its impact, aiming to distribute another $150,000 in grant funding in 2023.

“A big thank you to our sponsor Tangelo Advice Consulting who continue to be a valued supporter of Future2.”

Mr Slovinec says Future2’s willingness to broaden its scope in consideration of the former AFA Foundation shows that it is serious about making a real difference.

“The AFA Foundation was all about representing the best of the financial advice community and making a difference to improve the lives of all Australians.

“I look forward to working with the Board in making sure that Future2 continues to make a difference to communities all around the country,” he says.

Future2 opens registrations for major fundraising events

Future2’s major Future2 fundraising events are now open for registration: the Future2 Wheel Classic and the Future2 Hike Challenge. Both events will be held between 16 and 19 November 2023 in the lead up to the FAAA conference.

“The Future2 Wheel Classic will ride through some of the most iconic routes around Adelaide, while the Hike Challenge will take participants through the picturesque Flinders Ranges,” Ms Berry said.

“I strongly encourage the financial services community to register for both events to help Future2 fundraise for our grants process and partake in a great team experience.”
