SPAA exam tutorial opportunity for members to improve audit skills

The SMSF Professionals’ Association of Australian (SPAA) is offering its members a comprehensive two-day course to examine the technical requirements of the Australian Auditing Standards and how they should be applied to an SMSF audit.

The courses will be held in Sydney on 11 and 12 September, and be presented by Shirley Schaefer, a Director of BDO, the independently owned accounting practice with offices in every capital city as well as Cairns.

SPAA CEO Andrea Slattery says: “The tutorial aims to give greater confidence to anyone wanting to know what areas the exam will cover, to revise their understanding of the rules for SMSFs, and brush up on their exam techniques.

“As we enter the FOFA era, the role of the SMSF auditor has never been more important, making this two-course imperative for any SPAA member who wants to be an SMSF Specialist Auditor and, as such, has to comply with the SPAA Code of Professional Conduct.

“The SSAud designation, unique to SPAA, is the only specialist SMSF audit qualification listed on Schedule 1AAA in the SIS Act.”

Day 1 will look at the approval/registration requirements of the SPAA Code of Professional Conduct, as well as the audit of an SMSF’s financial statements. It will include practical examples. Day 2 will examine the SIS compliance audit of an SMSF, and again include practical examples and case studies.

Ms Schaefer, an auditor by training and an SMSF expert by choice, established BDO’s separate superannuation unit in 1996 in recognition of the need to give SMSF trustees quality advice.
