Implications of the U.S. election on bond markets

The surprise election result in the United States last week saw both Donald Trump’s ticket elected to the Presidency and both houses of Congress remain in Republican hands, a result that defied all the polls and called into question a great deal of expert opinion.

The event introduces many uncertainties to the path of economic and monetary policy, the legislative agenda and regulatory framework, and international relations and trade policy, but there are some tentative points we can make about its likely influence on bond markets:
