Chinese economic data beats expectations

Chinese Economic data

  • Chinese industrial production rose at an 8.8 per cent annual rate in May, in line with forecasts and up from 8.7 per cent in April. In the month, industrial production lifted by 0.71 per cent in May, up from 0.70 per cent growth in April.
  • Chinese retail sales rose at a 12.5 per cent annual rate in May, above forecasts (12.1 per cent) and above the 11.9 per cent annual growth in April. It was the fastest annual growth in retail sales for four months. In the month retail sales grew by 1.16 per cent, up from the 0.82 per cent gain in April.
  • Fixed asset investment rose at a 17.2 per cent annual rate in the five months to May, above the forecast average (17.1 per cent).
