AMP Capital has expanded its new Australian Fundamental Equities team, with the appointment of Andy Gardner as Portfolio Manager/Analyst and Ed Rayner as Senior Portfolio Manager/Analyst.

AMP Capital’s Head of Fundamental Equities Ella Brown said the appointments bolster the current Australian fundamental equities offering and provide additional talent to launch AMP Capital’s new products – concentrated, income-focused and long/short strategies.

“These appointments add yet more depth and breadth of experience to the AMP Capital Australian Fundamental Equities team. We now have the right people, products and structure in place to deliver on our goal of achieving outstanding investment outcomes for clients,” Ms Brown said.

Andy Gardner joined the firm as a Portfolio Manager/Analyst on 16 January 2012, and is responsible for the Australian resources sector. He has more than 10 years’ investment experience, and joins AMP Capital from MF Global.

In addition, Ed Rayner who has been seconded from AllianceBernstein since October 2011 has accepted a permanent role at AMP Capital as Senior Portfolio Manager/Analyst, effective 1 April 2012. Mr Rayner will continue to run a core growth strategy. Mr Rayner has 16 years’ international investment experience gained at AllianceBernstein, UBS Brinson and JP Morgan Investment.

The AMP Capital Australian Fundamental Equities team now comprises 13 investment professionals located in Sydney. It includes Senior Portfolio Managers/Analysts Gian Pandit, Jonas Palmqvist, Michael Price and Andrew Lally, Portfolio Managers/Analysts Adrian Lemme, Carlos Castillo, Phillip Hudak and Thomas Young, as well as ESG specialists Dr Ian Woods, Mans Carlsson-Sweeny and Karin Halliday.

At the same time, Ms Brown has also announced AMP Capital will launch a global resources fund to be managed by another new hire, John Payne. Mr Payne joined the broader Fundamental Equities team as a Senior Portfolio Manager on 15 February 2012. Mr Payne has over 24 years’ experience in funds management. He has a successful investment track record running a variety of global resource strategies at Hexam Capital, Baring Asset Management, Invesco, Tiburon and Capital Elements.

“John’s appointment introduces a new capability to AMP Capital and will allow us to launch a global resources fund to meet increasing demand from our clients in Asia and the Middle East,” she said.
