The SMSF Association’s 2022 Technical Summit held over two days on the Gold Coast again highlights how SMSF specialists relish in-person events as well as demonstrating the value they bring to the sector, says Association CEO John Maroney.

“This Technical Summit, the first time we have held it over two days, was an outstanding success based on all the feedback we have received from the delegates who attended.

“The combination of SMSF experts at the top of their professions and topical issues meant delegates got the opportunity to gain valuable insights into the latest developments, trends and ongoing conversations surrounding SMSFs.

“In particular, the breakfast event that took a critical look at the Quality of Advice Review was well attended with Allens Partner Michelle Levy, who is heading the Review, being extremely forthright in her comments.

“Among our specialist members there is a real understanding about the importance of the Review in reframing the advice industry along more professional lines, so they were more than pleased to hear from Levy that her current thinking was along these lines.

“From our perspective, it demonstrated how well a topical issue can be debated in a live forum when you have quality speakers who are prepared to express their opinions.”

Maroney says the Association is well down the path towards planning the 2023 National Conference to be held in Melbourne in February.

“This year we delayed the National Conference by two months for COVID-related reasons and were well rewarded when we attracted more than 1000 delegates to Adelaide. So, we are confident that our Melbourne event, which will celebrate the Association’s 20th anniversary, will be well attended.

“As the just-completed Technical Summit showed, as did the National Conference, having face-to-face interactions is so critical to how our members learn from their peers. It’s not just about attending sessions and listening to speakers. It’s also very much about being able to collaborate with peers and learn from them.”
