ANZIIF support ICA’s Extreme Weather and Disaster Response Planning Guide

Katrina Shanks
The Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) is proud to support the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA)’s Extreme Weather and Disaster Response Planning Guide.
The Planning Guide serves as a best practice framework to assist insurers in the development of strategies to manage extreme weather and disaster events.
Developed in response to the devastating weather events that struck NSW and Southeast Queensland in 2022, the guide offers practical recommendations for general insurers preparing for and responding to disaster events affecting a large number of customers.
At ANZIIF, we recognise the importance of preparedness in the face of extreme weather and disaster events. Having a comprehensive plan ensures insurers can respond effectively, supporting clients during some of the most challenging times of their lives.
ANZIIF is dedicated to empowering insurance professionals with the tools and expertise necessary to effectively understand, prepare for, and respond to disaster events. Our professional development activities offer valuable knowledge and practical insights that can support insurance professionals when creating and refining their own extreme weather and disaster management strategies. These include:
- Catastrophe preparedness[1]: Explore the concept of the protection gap in catastrophe preparedness and discover strategies to enhance resilience.
- Navigating earthquake risks[2]: Discover the potential impacts of earthquakes on client’s properties and businesses and explore the benefits and limitations of mitigation measures.
- Understanding Climate Drivers[3]: Understand local weather conditions and learn about the effects and underlying causes of some of the key drivers behind the weather in Australia, New Zealand, and tropical Southeast Asia.
- Understanding Catastrophes in Southeast Asia[4]: Discover the impact that catastrophic weather events have had on clients, homes, businesses and insurance costs in Southeast Asia.
These PD activities, in addition to other resources such as articles and whitepapers, are available on the ANZIIF website for ANZIIF members.
ANZIIF also offer the article, Navigating natural catastrophes and man-made risks[5], which explores changes to legislation and insurance policies based on recent natural disasters. This resource is open to the public.
“Now is the time to upskill your insurance professionals, so they can be prepared for when a significant, extreme weather event occurs”, says ANZIIF CEO, Katrina Shanks.
