The Association of Financial Advisers (AFA) today announced a new award – the AFA Female Adviser of the Year (the Award) – designed to champion excellence in female financial advisers.

Speaking at the AFA’s National Conference on the Gold Coast this morning, AFA CEO Richard Klipin said the AFA is introducing the Award to encourage, support and reward the valuable work female financial advisers do for their clients, for their profession and for their industry.

“People may ask why we need to introduce a special award for women,” he said. “The argument goes that a good adviser is a good adviser, regardless of gender. However, when compared with their male colleagues, working women are still under-valued and under-paid. It’s a disappointing fact of life that the glass ceiling still exists.”

Mr Klipin also said women are the foundation of families, of many small businesses and of their communities and yet they continue to be under-represented. “What kind of world do we want our daughters to live in?” he asked. “What kind of opportunities can we imagine for them? It’s time to shine the spotlight on our professional women and promote their contributions and reward excellence in their endeavours.”

Mr Klipin also announced that Kerry Chikarovski, Former NSW Leader of the Opposition and the AFA’s Political Strategist had agreed to become Patron of the Award.

“Kerry had a long and distinguished career in politics and we believe she will be an inspiration to our female advisers,” Mr Klipin said.

Tower Life CEO Brett Clark said Tower Life is delighted to sponsor the Award and hoped it would encourage more women into the advice industry.

“We know that there are far fewer female than male financial advisers,” he said. “We hope that this Award, which  formally recognises the unique contribution female advisers make to their clients, will encourage more women to enter the financial advice industry.”

The first AFA Female Adviser of the Year will be awarded at the AFA’s 2011 conference.
