AFCA appoints Jonathon Hunyor to board
The Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) today announced the appointment of lawyer Jonathon Hunyor to its independent board, as a director with consumer experience. The appointment became effective on 1 January 2025.
AFCA’s Board Chair, Professor John Pollaers OAM, said Jonathon would bring an impressive set of skills and experience to the board. “With his legal expertise and proven leadership in advancing consumer rights, Jonathon will bring a unique and valuable perspective to our mission,” he said.
“He has extensive experience working with socially, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, which is extremely beneficial for our work as an ombudsman service that serves all members of the community.”
The AFCA Board consists of an independent Chair and an equal number of directors with consumer and industry experience, covering the multi-dimensional and highly complex industries AFCA deals with.
Jonathon is a practising lawyer with more than 25 years’ experience, across discrimination, human rights, Aboriginal land rights, administrative, criminal and coronial law. He serves on the boards of the Australian Pro Bono Centre and Community Legal Centres NSW.
He is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Justice and Equity Centre, a leading independent law and policy centre focused on serving those facing disadvantage and protecting human and civil rights. Before this he was the Principal Legal Officer of the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency in Darwin.
“Jonathon’s commitment to equity and justice aligns perfectly to our goals, and we are confident that his contribution will help drive meaningful outcomes for the community,” Professor Pollaers said.
Jonathon has also served as the Director of Legal Services at the Australian Human Rights Commission, including acting as counsel assisting the National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention.
Jonathon will replace Gerard Brody, the former Chief Executive of the Consumer Action Law Centre who became a member of the AFCA Board in 2023. Mr Brody is now the fulltime Chair of the Essential Services Commission in Victoria.
“We thank Gerard for his contribution to AFCA and we wish him continued success,” Professor Pollaers said.
